Description

Model management comprises technologies and mechanisms to support the integration, transformation, evolution, and matching of models. It aims at supporting metadata-intensive applications such as database design, data integration, and data warehousing. To achieve this goal, a model management system has to provide definitions for models (i.e., schemas represented in some metamodel), mappings (i.e., relationships between different models), and operators (i.e., operations that manipulate models and mappings).

Model management has become more and more important, since the interoperability and/or integration of heterogeneous information systems is a frequent requirement of organizations. Some important operations in model management are Merge (integration of two models), Match (creating a mapping between two models), and ModelGen (transforming a model given in one modeling language into a corresponding model in a different modeling language).
